Free range poultry production is not new. It’s been part of farming practice for centuries and up until the 1960’s, many Australian households kept chickens. But since then family cooking has changed, busier lifestyles and the influence of international cuisine have increased demand. The poultry industry focused on efficiency and high yield production. But over the last few decades there has been a trend towards the more traditional methods. The free range approach is certainly more time consuming and relatively more costly, but our Lilydale farmers and our customers believe it’s worth the effort. |

The term ‘free range’ means birds are free to roam about in generous-sized paddocks. To attain certification, free range farms must comply with standards determined by the Free Range Egg & Poultry Australia (FREPA). These include: • Adequate housing and shelter from the elements • Protection from predators • No use of antibiotics • No growth hormones (no growth hormones are used for any commercial production chickens in Australia) • Natural foods only are permitted with the addition of vitamins and minerals as required for the birds’ welfare For more information, visit the FREPA website or contact contact: frepa@bigpond.com |
